Remember my post on kanopy<\/em> a few weeks ago…\u00a0 \u00a0Alright, Mr. DeMille, <\/a><\/em>\u00a0 ?\u00a0 Well there was\u00a0 an Interesting article\u00a0 in the Arts section of the Times recently\u00a0 not only about\u00a0 kanopy,<\/em>\u00a0but also other streaming services\u00a0 \u00a0including Broadway HD and PBS.\u00a0 \u00a0Some free, like kanopy<\/em>, some not.<\/p>\n

“Another fairly\u00a0recent arrival<\/a>\u00a0on t<\/em>he streaming scene is kanopy<\/a>, which is free with a public-library card in 200 systems nationwide. A big chunk of bandwidth is occupied by Shakespeare telecasts the BBC produced in the 1970s and \u201980s with a dizzying array of star (or not-yet-star) actors. We\u2019re talking Helen Mirren in \u201cAs You Like It\u201d and a 1981 \u201cOthello\u201d with Anthony<\/em> Hopkins as the title character (this wouldn\u2019t fly anymore) facing Bob Hoskins\u2019s Iago. I was happy to rewatch my favorite Lady Macbeth, Jane Lapotaire, whom I had discovered when that BBC production was shown in France way back when. Offerings of more recent vintage include a \u201cJulius Caesar\u201d transposed by the director Gregory Doran to the Arab Spring.<\/em><\/p>\n

Just as good are the documentaries, especially a 1990 interview with the performance artist Karen Finley; a chat with Martha Wilson, founder of the experimental performance space Franklin Furnace; and an illuminating exploration of \u201cHamlet\u201d with David Tennant, Simon Russell Beale and Ben<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0Whishaw. For me, though, the biggest find was\u00a0\u201cTheater of War,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0about the 2006 production of \u201cMother Courage and Her Children,\u201d starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline, at the Delacorte Theater, with rehearsal footage and a step-by-step breakdown of the production\u2019s evolution.”<\/em><\/p>\n
